Homer Bransford Pack, Jr. was born in 1922 in Colorado. He served in the US Air Corps as a Sergeant and Senior Gunner on the B-29 aircraft #42-6231. Homer was killed in a plane crash on June 15, 1944.

Akins' accident happened at 1450Z eleven miles northeast of Kiangyu, Mianyang Shi, Sichuan, China on 15 June 1944. Pilot and ten crew members were killed when their aircraft crashed into the side of a sheer cliff and exploded.

The plane took off from Pengshan, China. Takeoff appeared normal in all respects, as stated by qualified B-29 pilots who were observing takeoffs from the control tower. Between the hours of 1345Z and 1415Z, 15 June 1944, a series of position plots were received on an unidentified aircraft from the Chinese Warning Net. These plots placed the aircraft well north of course, if returning to Pengshan. The last report was 115 miles northeast of Pengshan. All reports were in line with the scene of the accident. No attempt was made to contact this aircraft by radio because its identity was unknown. On 20 June 1944, a search party reached the scene of an aircraft accident, reported by the Chinese and found the radio operator's log which contained the last three digits of the subject aircraft's serial number. The Board has not sufficient evidence to determine the cause or to fix the responsibility of the accident. Weather was not a factor.

Sergeant Pack is now buried in the Fort Smith National Cemetery, Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas, USA in a common grave with his crew. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
