Paul Eugene “Gene” Pakari was born in 1920 in Belmont County, Ohio. He was the son of Anthony W. Pakari and Mary Miller Pakari. He resided in Belmont County, Ohio prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on April 14, 1942 at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Sales clerk and also as Single, without dependents. Paul served as a Corporal and Radio Operator on C-47A #42-24360, 97th Squadron, 28th Transport Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

C-47A #42-24360 took off, with a crew of 3, from Yunnan, China on a cargo mission to Misamari, India. After takeoff they were not seen nor heard from again. Paul was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission. His name is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph located in Barnesville Catholic Cemetery, Barnesville, Belmont County, Ohio, USA.

Cpl Pakari was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
