Robert Clayton Purvis was born on February 13, 1923 in Grant County, Indiana. He served in the US Air Corps as a First Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. 1st Lieutenant Purvis was killed when U.S. Army Air Corps B-29-1-BW Superfortress #42-6238, converted to tanker, crashed into Emei Mountain in China due to bad weather. Nine other airmen also perished. He is now buried in the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA in a common grave with Major John C. Mathhews. 1Lt Purvis was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
