William Harold Ruane was born on November 26, 1920 in Illinois. He was the son of John Joseph Ruane and Mary McNamara Ruane. He served in the Quartermaster branch of the US Air Corps as a Technician 5th Grade and food kicker in an aircraft during World War II. William died on May 2, 1944 at the age of 23 and is now buried in the Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, Chemung County, New York, USA in a common grave with Technician 5th Grade Modesta. Technician 5th Grade Ruane was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
