Robert James "Sandy" Sandell was born on January 15, 1916 in Oklahoma. He served in the American Volunteer Group as a Squad Leader during World War II. He was killed on 7 Feb 1942 when his repaired Tomahawk shed its tail on a test flight over Mingaladon airport. He is now buried in the Stroud Cemetery, Stroud, Lincoln County, Oklahoma, USA. Sandell was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
