Walter C. Schaefer was born on April 24, 1921 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He was the son of Carl L. Schaefer and Clara E. Stroup Schaefer. He served in the US Air Corps as a Technical Sergeant and Radio Operator of an aircraft during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 7, 1945 at the age of 24 in Liaoning, China and is now buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA. Tsgt Schaefer was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
