Cliffort T. Schapansky was born on August 24, 1919. He was the son of Thomas Martin Schapansky and Lydia Schneider Schapansky. He served in the 11th Bomber Squadron, 341st Bomber Group, Medium as a First Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. He died on October 9, 1943 and is now buried in the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, McPherson County, Kansas, USA. First Lieutenant Schapansky was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
