Ernest Benjamin Schenck was born on November 4, 1921 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He served in the US Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant and was passenger on C-46A #42-107386 aircraft during World War II when he was killed. This C46 with a crew of Two and 33 passengers departed Chabua Air base India for Karachi Pakistan. While flying over remote Jungle terrain they developed mechanical problems caught fire and crashed on a mountain at the elevation of 6559 feet killing 35. Twenty two of the passengers were in the 22nd Bomb Squadron 341st Bomb Group being sent home for reassignment. Miraculously there was 1 survivor T/Sgt. Marvin H. Jacobs. He walked away with minor cuts and bruises and was soon rescued by locals and repatriated to the US. The casualties were eventually located and buried in a mass grave at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in 1950.

Ssgt Schenck was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
