John Russell Shadow was born on October 12, 1922 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Edward Franklin Shadow and Sara Elizabeth Mountz Osman. He grew up in a railroading family. Having completed four years of high school, John enlisted 6 February 1943 in the Army. He found himself in the 1330th Army Air Force Base Unit in a Combat Cargo Group posted in Jorhat, Assam, India. This was one of many units flying "The Hump", providing transport and flying cargo to troops after the Japanese cut the Burma Road.

The date of his death, 15 October 1945, was the first day of a new offensive against the Japanese on the Katha-Bhamo Line pushing toward Burma to recapture and open the Burma Road. He was killed in an air crash, just where and under what circumstances is not known - whether flying "The Hump" or in support of the new offensive within Assam.

PFC Shadow is now buried in the Shoops Cemetery, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
