David Dickson Sloan was born on May 1, 1923 in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida. He served in the US Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 19, 1945 in China and is now buried in the US Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery, Washington, District of Columbia, District of Columbia, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Sloan Family Cemetery, Garland, Sampson County, North Carolina.

2Lt Sloan was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
