Charles Orritt Smith was born on November 3, 1917 in Maine. He resided in Oxford County, Maine prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 25, 1942 in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Foremen and also as Single, without dependents. Charles served as a 2nd Lieutenant, 98th Squadron, 28th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Charles died in the "Line Of Duty" of a non-battle related incident in China during the war. Possibly the crash of an airplane. He is now buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery, West Bethel, Oxford County, Maine, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
