Elza Edward Smith was born on December 6, 1921. He was the son of Elza S. Smith and Mabel Ella Kitterman Smith. He served in the 14th US Army Air Forces as a First Lieutenant and Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. 1Lt Smith died on October 5, 1944 at the age of 22 in China and is now buried in the White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
