Oswald O. Southworth entered the military service in California. He resided in Santa Clara County, California prior to the war. Oswald served as a Major and Photographer in the 490th Bomber Squadron, 341st Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a Passenger on B-25J #44-28849. B-25J #44-28849 took off, with a crew of 3 and 3 passengers, from Warazup Air Field, Burma on an administrative flight to Ledo, India. After takeoff they were not heard from nor seen again on August 12, 1943. Oswald was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war. Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until April 11, 1946, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom. His name is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.

Major Southworth was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
