Henry G. Staple was born on September 5, 1918. He served in the 308th Bombardment Group as a First Lieutenant and Pilot of the B-24D aircraft during World War II. On April 23, 1943, B-24D 41-24279 "BETTY-G" crashed six miles from Chabua field (en route from its operational base in Chengkung, China), just before landing. Three crewmen were killed; three more were seriously injured. 1Lt Staple is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.

He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
