Francis G. Steiger was born in 1921 in Menlo, Thomas County, Kansas. He served in the 425th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. He was the co-pilot of B-24 #44-40822 that disappeared on a combat mine-laying mission over the South China Sea, after departing Kunming, China. He went missing on August 9, 1944 and was officially declared dead on February 25, 1946. His name is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.

2Lt Steiger was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
