John Mason Stulz was born on August 25, 1924. He attended the Citadel Military College of South Carolina. Stulz was the pilot of B-24J #42-78685, assigned to the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 492nd Bombardment Squadron. They were flying a cargo of fuel from Tezpur India over the Himalayas to Kunming China when they disappeared.

Because his body was not recovered, he is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph located in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA. 1Lt Stulz was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
