William Arthur Sylvester was born on November 10, 1919 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin and prior to his enlistment was employed as an x-ray technician at the Children’s hospital, Milwaukee. He enlisted in the Air Corps in 1941 and was called to duty in January, 1942. He was awarded his silver wings in Arkansas in October, 1943, and assigned to the Ferry command. In February, 1945, he left for India where he was attached to the transport command flying between India and China.

William was Killed in Action on March 16, 1945 at the age of 25 over Kumning, China and is now buried in the Pine Cliff Cemetery, Galesville, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
