John F. Tone, Jr. was born in 1916 in Ohio. He resided in Allen County, Indiana prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on April 1, 1942 in La Fayette, Indiana. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Baker and also as Single, without dependents. John served as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot on C-46A #41-12397, India-China Wing, Air Transport Command, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

C-46A # 41-12397 took off, with a crew of 4, from Chengking, China on a cargo mission to Mohanbari, India. After departing from Chengking they were not seen nor heard from again. The entire crew was lost. John was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission. His name is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph located in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.

2Lt Tone was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
