Robert Paul Torango was born on December 19, 1921 in Wyandotte, Wayne County, Michigan. He was the son of Thomas James Torango and Norma C. Saucier Torango. He served in the 74th Fighter Squadron, 23rd Fighter Group as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. He was killed on 30 oct 1944, flying aboard North American P-51C-10-NT Mustang #43-24986 that crashed 30 miles SE of Kweilin, China due to bad weather while on ferry flight to Luichow. He is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.

2Lt Torango was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
