Mahlon James Tyler was born at Westford, New York on December 2, 1916. He was graduated from Cornell University in 1940 and taught vocational agriculture at a Lisbon, New York high school before entering the service as an aviation cadet in October 1941. He received his wings at the Gulf Coast Air Corps Training Center, Moore Field, Texas, in 1942. He went to the China-Burma-India theater in January 1945.

Tyler was killed in a plane crash on April 4, 1945, during a thunderstorm while flying the hump from India to China. He is now buried in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, USA. 1Lt Tyler was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
