Emmett B. Van Deventer was born on April 23, 1921 in Fletcher, Comanche County, Oklahoma. He resided in Oklahoma prior to the war. Emmett served as a First Lieutenant on B-24D #42-40930, 425th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Emmett was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 was shot down and crashed near Hankow, China during the war. He was originally interred in Schofield Barracks Mausoleum #2, Hawaii and was later interred in the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA in a common grave with his crew on May 12, 1949.

1Lt Van Deventer was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
