Emil J. “Mickey” Van Den Berge was born on April 4, 1921. He served in the 1337th Army Air Force Base Unit as a Sergeant and Radio Operator of an aircraft during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 25, 1944 at the age of 23 in a flight over Burma and is now buried in the Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum, Evergreen Park, Cook County, Illinois, USA.

Sgt Van Den Berge was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
