William J. Varner was born on July 31, 1923. He was the son of Charles Everett Varner and Doris A Strickland Varner. He served in the US Air Corps as a Private First Class and food kicker in an aircraft during World War II. He died on May 19, 1945 at the age of 21 and is now buried in the Mill Creek Cemetery, Jones County, Mississippi, USA.

PFC Varner was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
