Demming Morton Ward was born in North Carolina. He was the son of Doctor Ernest Ward and Mamie Evie Morton Ward. He was a sophmore at Wake Forest College when he enlisted, in the Air Force in February, 1943. He was sent overseas in February 1945, and was assigned to the 374th Bombardment Squardron at Chengtu, China, at the time of his death. He was Killed in Action on May 8, 1945 on a mission in Burma and is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA in a common grave with his crew.

1Lt Ward was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
