Lewis W. Wertz, Jr. was born on December 6, 1924 in Maryland. He was the son of Lewis W. Wertz and Anna A. Herr Wertz. He resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on April 13, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in a machine shop and also as Single, without dependents. Lewis served as a Corporal and Assistant Engineer of an aircraft in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Lewis died in the "Line Of Duty" of a non-battle related incident during the war. He was originally interred in the Schofield Barracks Cemetery, Hawaii and was later repatriated in Baltimore National Cemetery, Baltimore, Baltimore City, Maryland, USA on October 30, 1947.

Cpl Wertz was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
