Sam B. White, Jr. was born on January 26, 1917. He served in the 772nd Bomber Squadron, 463rd Bomber Group, Heavy as a Major during World War II. On December 7, 1944 aboard B-29 "Carlalani" (serial 42-65213), this ship and crew Piloted by Major Sam B. White was returning to India after a mission to Mukden, Manchuria when it iced up and broke apart over China. Apparently on the return leg, they were required to take on additional passengers at Kiunglai, China for a ferry mission to Piardoba, India.

Pilot White, had just taken off from Kiunglai with 17 men on board when the ship started to pick up ice at 4500 feet. They continued to climb to an altitude of 10600 feet. By this time the aircraft had picked up so much ice that it could climb no further. Aircraft Commander White tried to make a turn to return to base at which time it went into a flat spin, and began to disintegrate in midair. All aboard were Killed in Action.

Maj White is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Resthaven Gardens Cemetery, Oklahoma City, Cleveland County, Oklahoma. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
