Wilbur Hartwell Willis was born on October 3, 1916. He was the son of George Hartwell Willis and Ada W. Parker Willis. He served as a Staff Sergeant and Assistant Engineer / Gunner on B-24J "Temptation" #41-24129, 373rd Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force that crashed in Vietnam during World War II. He was lost in the shootdown of his B-24 flying from Yangkai, China when the B-24 was jumped by fighters near Hanoi. He bailed out but didn't make it. He is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.

Ssgt Willis was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
