Robert W. Young was born in 1923 in Tennessee. He resided in Shelby County, Tennessee prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 15, 1942 at Camp Forrest, Tennessee. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a brick and stone mason and also as Single, without dependents. Robert served as a Second Lieutenant and Bombardier on B-24J #44-40787, 374th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

B-24J #44-40787 took off from Liuchow, China on a combat sea sweep mission. They attacked a five ship convoy that was accompanied by a destroyer and are believed to have been shot down by the anti-aircraft guns on that destroyer and crashed at sea. The entire crew of 7 were lost. His name is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.

2Lt Young was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
