James Peter Zahnen was born on March 11, 1922 in Woodward, Woodward County, Oklahoma. He completed four years of high school. In 1940 he worked as an assistant janitor in a public school in Ennis, Texas. When he enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 31, 1942, in Dallas his civilian occupation was listed as an apprentice to construction and hand trades.

James served in the 1337th Army Air Force Base Unit as a Private First Class and Radio Operator of an aircraft during World War II. He was killed in action on January 7, 1945 at the age of 22 in the China-India-Burma theater and is now buried in the Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Taylor, Williamson County, Texas, USA.

PFC Zahnen was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
