Bruce Gene Boylan was born on July 7, 1921 in Ingham County, Michigan. He started his military career in July 1941 by enlisting in the service after two years at the North Texas Agricultural School. Once in the service, Bruce entered the Air Corps Advanced Flying School. Bruce learned to fly across a number of airfields in Texas including Kelly, Jones, and Randolph Field. Bruce passed the Air Corps board examination and graduated from the Air Corps Advanced Flying School at the Gulf Coast Air Corps Training Center located in Foster Field, Victoria, Texas (July 3, 1942).

After graduation, Bruce became a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Forces Reserve. In July 1942 Bruce moved to Sarasota, Florida and became part of the 58th Fighters Group, in the 69th Fighter Squadron. Bruce was then stationed in the Canal Zone, or the Panama Canal, in August 1942. In May 1943, Bruce was assigned to the elite 23rd Fighter Group in the 76th Fighter Squadron. This squadron served as a bridge between the United State Army Air Force and the China Air Task Force. Bruce piloted many missions over China including Lingling, Kweilin, and Suichwan. On December 29th, 1943 Bruce Boylan was killed in action in China. He is now buried in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, DeWitt, Clinton County, Michigan, USA.

1Lt Boylan was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
