John Milton Burris was born on June 25, 1924. He was the son of John Leonard Burris and Etta Celeste Brown Burris. He served in the 14th Combat Cargo Squadron, 4th Combat Cargo Group as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He died on July 30, 1945 at the age of 21 and is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Evergreen Cemetery, Leo, Jackson County, Ohio. Staff Sergeant Burris was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
