Hershal Gaither was born on February 27, 1916. He was the son of Henry Lee Gaither and Iva Ann Gaither. He served in the US Air Corps as a First Lieutenant and Navigator/Bombardier of an aircraft during World War II. He died on March 29, 1945 in line of duty on return from bombing mission near Chihkiang, Hunan Province in China. He is now buried in the Fairview Cemetery, Pryor, Mayes County, Oklahoma, USA. 1Lt Gaither was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
