Harold L. Harwell was born on September 10, 1921 in San Angelo, TX and attended school there, and in San Antonio. He entered the service at Kelly Field and had been in the US Army Air Forces for several years. He was sent to India as one of the personnel of a pursuit squadron and had served in Puerto Rico and Africa. Harold was Killed in Action on April 28, 1943 at the age of 21 in China and is now buried in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, USA. He had been overseas about 14 months at the time of his death.

Ssgt Harwell was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
