Howard Kolbert was born on October 14, 1921. He entered the military service in New York and served in the 61st Bomber Squadron, 39th Bomber Group, Very Heavy as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was declared "Missing in Action" on May 15, 1945 and is commemorated on the Courts of the Missing, Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.

1Lt Kolbert was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
