Robert J. Kroll was born in 1921 in Michigan. He resided in Ingham County, Michigan prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 12, 1942 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, without dependents. Robert served as a First Lieutenant and Bombardier on B-25D #41-30441, 11th Bomber Squadron, 341st Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

B-25D #41-30441 took off, with a crew of 7, on a sea sweep in the South China area. They developed engine trouble and had to make a water landing in the Gulf of Tongking. 5 of the crew members survived and 2 of the crew members were killed in this landing. Robert was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission. His name is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.
