Bertram A. Schusterbauer served in the US Air Corps as a First Lieutenant during World War II. On 23 Jan 1944, B-25C 41-12960 of the 22nd Bombardment Squadron departed Chakulia, India on an armed ferrying mission. It was loaded with equipment and supplies as it headed for Yangkai, China, as part of the Squadron's transfer to the 14th Air Force. It was first reported missing in flight. This was later changed when the wreckage of the plane was found at was 26° 58' N, 095° 30' E, approximately ten miles north northeast of Kham Ti, Burma; about eighty miles northwest of Myitkyina. Bertram is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA in a common grave with his crew.

1Lt Schusterbauer was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China but his name is inscribed as Bertom A. Schustenbauer and ranked as Second Lieutenant.
