Elden E. Shirley was born on March 17, 1913 in Saco, York County, Maine. He served in the 11th Bomber Squadron, 341st Bomber Group, Medium as a Staff Sergeant and Bombardier of a B-25 during World War II. He died on May 8, 1943 at the age of 30 and is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA in a common grave with his crew. Ssgt Shirley was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
