George Seamans was born on January 19, 1921 and was from Peoria, Illinois. On March 19, 1944, he was a crewmember (Navigator) of a B-17F “Dark Eyes” (41-24405) flying out of Amendola, Italy on a bombing mission to Klagenfurt, Austria with the 96th Bomber Squadron, 2nd Bomber Group, 5th Bomber Wing, 15th Air Force. On the return trip, the formation was attacked by enemy fighters. “Dark Eyes was attacked by 2 fighters and shot down after being hit by rockets. Eight of the crew were killed to include Seamans and two parachuted to safety but were captured and spent the rest of the war as POWs. The town of Andraž nad Polzelo in Slovenia, where the bomber crashed, remember the crew of Dark Eyes with a memorial dedicated in 2017. FROM HIS OBIT: He is the son of the late Mr. Merton & Mrs. Emma {Scharingar} Seamans of 414 Hayward Street in Peoria, Illinois. Lt. Seamans has been in the service since Sept. 22, 1941, and did his training at Fort Riley, Kansas, and did some Signal Corps work in Puerto Rico before going overseas. He leaves two brothers in the military, Lt. Theodore, and Sgt. Robert Seamans, and one sister, Pvt. Virginia Seamans of the Marines. Awards: Purple Heart Medal, Navigator Wings, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, European Campaign Medal with 2 Battle Stars.
