James Kazuo Okubo was born on May 30, 1920 in Anacortes, Skagit County, Washington. He was the son of Kenzo Okubo and Fuyu Kanzaki Okubo. James served as a Medic, Technician Fifth Grade with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team near Biffontaine, France during World War II. Under constant barrages of German small arms and machine gun fire, he treated 17 men on October 28 and eight more on October 29, 1944. On November 4, 1944, he ran 75 yards under machine gun fire to reach a wounded crewman of a damaged tank. He treated and evacuated the seriously wounded crewman from the burning tank, saving his life. After the war, he became a dentist and relocated in Detroit but was tragically killed in an automobile accident at age 46.

T/5 Okubo died on January 29, 1967 and is now buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, USA.
