Elmer D. Wheadon was born on March 16, 1924. He resided in Rockingham County, New Hampshire prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 24, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the manufacture of boots and shoes and also as Single, without dependents. Elmer served as a Sergeant and waist gunner on B-17F #42-30126, 416th Bomber Squadron, 99th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Elmer was "Killed In Action" when his B-17F was attacked and shot down by enemy aircraft fire over Switzerland. He was temporarily buried He was temporarily buried in what was then the American Cemetery in Münsingen, Switzerland. He is now buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
