Castleton D. Smith was born on July 17, 1915. He served in the 714th Bomber Squadron, 448th Bomber Group, Heavy as a First Lieutenant during World War II. Navigator of the B-24J #42-100284, he died of severe flak injuries on July 20, 1944 when their plane was hit by flak while bombing the target in Friedrichshafen, Germany on March 18, 1944. The plane rapidly lost its fuel, turned towards Switzerland and crash landed at Dubendorf. He was temporarily buried in what was then the American Cemetery in Münsingen, Switzerland. His final resting place is in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA.
