On a B-24 Liberator participating in a mission to bomb an oil refinery in Blechammer, Germany when the plane was shot down by German aircraft and crashed into a swampy area near Nemesvita, Hungary beside Lake Balaton on 30 Jun 44. The airplane was returning to its base in Italy.
He is buried in the same grave as SSgt Arthur J. Popa. He also has a cenotaph located in the Milltown Cemetery, Milltown, Harrison County, Indiana.
