Comments:
John H. Mitchel served in the 85th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron as a Technician 4th Grade during World War II. He was a member of 2LT Josefson's crew which on September 9, 1944, by mid-day, was the first to breach the Belgian border and enter Petange, Luxembourg. A hidden Wehrmacht cannon hit their armored M8 Greyhound Patrol car just as it approached a flour mill. 2LT Josefson was killed, and three others in the car were wounded. Gunner Cyril Mayrose, Technical Sergeant and driver Burt Magee, and Radio Operator John Mitchell escaped the car, which continued to burn for days. We currently have no information what happened to T4 Mitchel after the incident.
