Charles A. Wardle was born on June 30, 1919 in Almy, Wyoming. He was the son of Arthur J Wardle and Lillian Hutchinson Crompton Wardle. Charles served as a Second Lieutenant and Bombardier on the B-17 "Dorsal Queen" #42-30264, 551st Bomber Squadron, 385th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. His plane, while on a return mission from Reims, France, was involved in a mid-air collision with B-17 #42-3290 "Raunchy Wolf" also known as "El Lobo." They crashed at Tillingham Hall Farm, Bulphan, England. The entire crews of both B-17's were killed except Ssgt John J. Adams of the Dorsal Queen who was the only survivor.

2LT Wardle is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
