Stanley J. Gula was born in 1919 in Massachusetts. He resided in Hampshire County, Massachusetts prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on April 30, 1942 at Westover Field, Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the manufacture of leather and also as Single, without dependents.
Stanley served as a Technical Sergeant and Radio Operator / Gunner on the B-17 "Dorsal Queen" #42-30264, 551st Bomber Squadron, 385th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. His plane, while on a return mission from Reims, France, was involved in a mid-air collision with B-17 #42-3290 "Raunchy Wolf" also known as "El Lobo." They crashed at Tillingham Hall Farm, Bulphan, England. The entire crews of both B-17's were killed except Ssgt John J. Adams of the Dorsal Queen who was the only survivor.
TSGT Gula is now buried in the Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, South Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.
