Statement from 1st Lt Irving G. Sly:
"On 20 November 1944, I was flying No. 3 in Red flight with Lt. Newman on my wing. We were just returning from our mission when we ran into a flak area. We were at 3.000 feet over Wehrden, Germany, (5 miles East of Saarbrucken) where the flak was very intense and accurate. Suddenly over the R.T. we heard some one yelling and I could just make out a few words. He said he was hit and was going down. The voice was high pitched and it sounded as if he was very excited. Looking around for Newman, I couldn't find him anywhere and after a few seconds I saw a plane crash and explode on the banks of the Saar river. No chute was observed. The time was approximately 0930."
