Leonard Rollin Pierce was born on 6 March 1920 in Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York. He was the son of Rollin Melvin Pierce and Alice Marie Partise Pierce.

Leonard served in the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and pilot of the P-951 Mustang #42-106441 during World War II. He was Killed in Action on 13 May 1944. An hour into the mission to Posen, he bailed out for unknown reasons 30 miles E of Southwold, Suffolk. ASR a/c spotted him in the Channel 9 minutes after launching 150 yards from his dinghy, struggling with his still attached chute. When the rescue launch reached the location, they found only an empty dinghy with Pierce’s name on it.

1Lt Pierce was declared Missing in Action. His name is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
