Henry Palmer Niles was born in 1882 and came to Westville in 1884. He served four years with the U. S. Marines, accompanying the U. S. fleet in its course around the world. After his return, he lived in the American West for several years going from there to the Canadian Northwest, where he enlisted at Lethbridge, Alberta, in the Canadian Field Artillery a short time before the United States declared war. Trained for six months in a camp in the Northwest, he spent two months in Halifax, from where he sailed in December 1917. He then received training for eight months in Whitley Camp, England, from where he was sent to France in August 1918, as a member of the 1st Canadian D. A. C., 1st Section. He was engaged in the final drive from August till the end of the war, then going into Germany in the Army of Occupation, where he died of pneumonia.
