Ernest Milton Bishop was born on January 17, 1925. He was the son of Charles Evans Bishop and Alberta C. Bishop. He was the husband of Mary Louise Volhein Bishop.

Ernest served in the 585th Bomber Squadron, 394th Bomber Group, Medium, as a Staff Sergeant and Gunner on the B-26 #42-96224 during World War II. On August 7, 1944, his crew took off from airfield Station 455 in Holmsley South, England, on a mission to bomb the bridge at Nogent-sur-Seine, France. At 1:35 PM, their plane was shot down by flak and crashed 700m northeast of La Goulafrière - Cne de St-Pierre-des-Ifs, southwest of Lisieux. The only survivor in this crash was SSgt Bishop, who evacuated the plane by parachute but was taken as a prisoner. He was sent to Stalag Luft 4 in Gross-Tychow, Germany.

SSgt Bishop survived the war. He died on December 27, 1990, at the age of 65. He is now buried in the Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, Portsmouth City, Virginia, USA.
