David A. Donovan was born on July 6, 1918, in Bayonne, New Jersey. He served in the 358th Fighter Squadron, 355th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Fighter Pilot on the 43-6879 "Mary Joyce" during World War II.
On June 8, 1944, 1Lt Donovan took off from airfield Station 122 in Steeple Morden, England, flying in no. 3 position of Yellow section for a hunting mission. At 4:55 PM, his plane was shot down by flak, so he evacuated the airplane. He landed in the place called Le Moulin Poisnaud in Montboyer, France, where he successfully evaded German capture with the help of the French network.
